He was incredibly docile, so wonderfully smooth and beautiful, and just coiled around my fingers like we’d been best friends forever. On the way, I spotted a little rubber boa (not a rubber snake, a real snake called a rubber boa) on the side of the road and couldn’t resist scooping him up. It was lovely to watch the fire crackling and listen to everyone’s amiable chatter as we sat faces to the flames and backs to the cool, starlit night.Īround 10:30, we cleaned up and rolled out to a birthday party that was happening at Rick’s for Alida, Ali, and Maddie. It was hot but it looked damn good.Īfter dinner, my crew and I had a campfire on Baby Beach, and made s’mores and banana boats. It was a really fun theme and people made great costumes-I was especially proud of mine, which I constructed from field pants, my yellow cardigan, and my red mousefur. I’m even split between airbender and waterbender, but I thought the description of airbender fit me better so I picked that one.

I sent everyone a quiz to find out what type of bender they were so they’d know how to dress. Last night for my dinner head, I chose Avatar: The Last Airbender as the theme. This morning while I was sitting on the fountain deck prepping for Yahoos, she and Tony walked by heading to the boatster and he and I exchanged a wistful glance…I missed that shift especially but I have no doubts that Amy is having just as good a time with my programming as I am with hers, so it’s all good. I do miss my naturalist stuff but I know Amy is killing it.

I might do it with permanent dye if it fades super quickly. Since it’s just tie dye it’s probably not going to last very long in my hair, but I really like the way it looks actually. The kids convinced me (not that it was particularly difficult) to dye the tips of my hair red. Today we played prisoner ball (a complex name game that results in the counselors losing and jumping in the lake), went rock climbing with Erika, and did tie dye. Ian, Alida, and I are all switchers, but Daniel and Nico have thus far made it so easy to slide into the role. Working with Ian, Alida, Nico and Daniel is also so awesome because I don’t feel like I know any of them very well, and I know after this week we’ll probably be a lot closer.

They seem like a great crew-a few small challenges (three girls got stung by wasps and were feeding off each others’ pain/whininess a bit one Autistic kid who’s super high functioning but just needs a little extra watching) but overall a very manageable crowd. It’s gonna be An Adventure but thus far has been a blast. Working with Yahoos (9-10 year olds) this week. And probably a dress under it because I expect it’s not very well ventilated and at some point in the evening I will want to take it off. We’re wearing penguin suits to the party Ryan will wear a tuxedo, and I will wear an actual penguin costume, courtesy of Coby. A far cry from the shaky, pitiful, nauseated “I…guess?” that was my response to my high school prom hopeful.

He squatted down and laid an egg which read “open me,” and inside it was a paper saying “Will you go to prom with me?” Obviously, I said yes-and I was able to say it with full heartfelt enthusiasm. It didn’t take me too long to figure out what was going on, though it took me several seconds to realize that the act was directed toward me. I was sitting on the steps with Tayna and Ian, just hanging out and chatting after my art shift with the midorees, when Ryan strutted out of the Cathedral room in a chicken suit, clucking and flapping. In this case though, all’s well that ends well-and honestly it couldn’t have ended better. Of course there’s no way to know how or when I got chosen, but these are the thoughts that my irrational brain produces…

Part of me was sure that I’d get someone I didn’t know at all, because I wasn’t just not in anyone’s top three, I was the last pick on the baseball team. Maybe because I never went to prom in high school, maybe because the idea/experience of getting asked out is so foreign to me, maybe because the one time I did get asked to prom was a horrifying experience…but whatever reason I was really anxious about it.

So I knew I was getting asked, just had no idea by whom. We were split into askers and askees, and the askers were instructed to pick someone that wouldn’t be in anyone’s top three guesses for who that person would ask. Tonight is staph prom, and for the past few days I was nervously awaiting getting asked.
